Organ Work is Progressing
There were no “lazy days of summer” for volunteers of
the Chevalier Theatre Organ Society this year. Society
members spent the latter part of July and early August
removing virtually the hundreds of components of the
Mighty Wurlitzer organ from the primary storage rooms,
sorting them out, and beginning to decipher how they
were assembled in their former installation, and how
they will be arranged in the chamber space at the
Chevalier Theatre.
On August 4, Allen Miller, the chair of the Technical
Committee of the American Theatre Organ Society (ATOS)
traveled from Connecticut to Medford to assess the work
done to date. Miller’s evaluation is part of the
procedure ATOS uses to consider grant applications to
the ATOS Endowment Fund, which the Chevalier Theatre
Organ Society has submitted.
Arts Council Grant Awarded
The Medford Arts Council has awarded the Chevalier
Theatre Organ Society a $250 grant for the purpose of
brings a Traveling Organ Education Program to the
Medford Public Schools. Presented by John Baratta, an
organist and retired high school band director from New
Jersey, the program provides a unique, first-hand lesson
utilizing an actual theatre pipe organ. Students will
learn about the theatre pipe organ and the role in
American music history, as well as its inner workings
and the job of the organist.
A non-profit organization, the Organ Society was
established in 2002 and is fortunate to have two organ
restoration professionals directing the volunteer
effort. Once installed and operating the Society plans
to contribute to the musical and historical education
and cultural enrichment of the public by presenting
concerts, shows and classes featuring theatre pipe organ
music.
